About

A northern harrier in flight.

SV Hikes is a collection of articles about hiking, birding, and natural history in and around Silicon Valley.

I’m a geographer and the founder of Geography Realm, where I write about geography, GIS, environmental issues, and the relationship between people and place.

I serve on the board of the Santa Clara Valley Bird Alliance, volunteer as a trail steward with the Open Space Authority, and serve on the Open Space Authority’s Expenditure Plan Oversight Committee. These roles allow me to contribute to the conservation, stewardship, and appreciation of the region’s birds, wildlife, trails, and open spaces.

SV Hikes approaches the Bay Area through the lens of a naturalist. Many of the articles on this site started with something I encountered on a hike: a bird I wanted to learn more about, a trail worth sharing, or an interesting aspect of local natural history. The site draws on my experiences exploring the Santa Cruz Mountains, Diablo Foothills, Baylands, and other landscapes throughout the region.
